What Is GST in Australia?

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a broad-based tax of 10% on most goods, services and items consumed in Australia. Introduced on 1 July 2000, GST is administered by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Businesses with a GST turnover of $75,000 or more must register for GST and charge it on their sales.

How to Calculate GST

Adding GST (GST Exclusive → GST Inclusive)

To add 10% GST to a price, multiply the GST-exclusive price by 1.1. For a GST rate other than 10%, multiply by (1 + GST rate).

  • GST amount = Base price × GST rate
  • Total including GST = Base price × (1 + GST rate)

Example: $100 × 1.1 = $110 (total including 10% GST). The GST component is $10.

Removing GST (GST Inclusive → GST Exclusive)

To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price, divide the price by 1.1 (for 10% GST). The GST component is the total price divided by 11.

  • Price without GST = Total price ÷ (1 + GST rate)
  • GST component = Total price ÷ 11 (at 10% rate)

Example: $110 ÷ 1.1 = $100 (price before GST). The GST component is $110 ÷ 11 = $10.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GST still 10% in Australia?

Yes, the GST rate in Australia remains 10% as of 2026. It has been unchanged since its introduction on 1 July 2000.

How do I calculate GST from the total amount?

To find the GST component from a GST-inclusive price, divide the total by 11. For example, $220 ÷ 11 = $20 GST.

What is the difference between GST inclusive and exclusive?

GST exclusive is the price before GST is added. GST inclusive is the total price including GST. In Australia, most advertised prices include GST.

Can I claim back GST on business purchases?

Yes, GST-registered businesses can claim GST credits (input tax credits) on purchases made for business use by lodging a Business Activity Statement (BAS) with the ATO.

What is the formula for reverse GST calculation?

To reverse-calculate GST, divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.1 to get the GST-exclusive price. For example, $110 ÷ 1.1 = $100 (ex-GST). You can also divide by 11 to find the GST component: $110 ÷ 11 = $10.
